What is the Lagna (Ascendant) and why does it matter more than your Sun sign?

The Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. In Vedic astrology, it is the most important single point in your chart.

Most people in the West know their "star sign" — also called the Sun sign. If you were born in January, you're a Capricorn. If you were born in July, you're a Cancer. This system is based entirely on where the Sun was in the zodiac when you were born.

In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the Sun sign has considerably less importance. The Lagna — your rising sign — takes its place as the primary lens through which your entire chart is read.

Why the Lagna matters

The Lagna defines which zodiac sign occupies your first house — the house of self, body and personality. Every house in your chart is counted from the Lagna. It determines which planets are benefic (helpful) and which are malefic (challenging) specifically for you, based on what houses they rule.

Two people born on the same day — say twins — could have different Lagnas if they were born more than two hours apart, because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours. This is why two people with the same Sun sign can have dramatically different life experiences.

How Rashi Advisor uses your Lagna

Every prediction, transit score, dasha interpretation and yoga analysis on Rashi Advisor is computed relative to your Lagna. When we say Saturn is transiting your 7th house, that's your 7th house from Lagna — not a generic sky position.

This is what makes the readings personalised rather than generic — and why entering an accurate birth time matters so much.
